Your baby or child may have sleeping problems and you think their diet is affecting their sleep, they are experiencing discomfort after a night feed which is disrupting their sleep or they are waking up during the night for a feed even though they have eaten enough that day. Your may also have a toddler or child who is waking up during the night hungry or you think their diet is causing sleep disruption and you would like help in managing this.

What are the causes of feed related sleeping problems?

Sleeping problems can be caused by a variety of things, particularly in babies where they are growing, developing and sensitive to change. Sometimes sleeping problems may resolve themselves, however in other cases they can persist past four months and cause major disruption to your life. Common causes can be un underlying allergy or intolerance, a feeding regime which does not suit your baby, persistent hunger due to inadequate feeding or a maternal diet high in caffeine if you are breastfeeding. In toddlers and children it may be that their diet or dietary habits are not appropriate and their intake of caffeine may be high which can disrupt their sleep.

What do you assess for feed associated sleeping problems?

Our dietitian will assess your baby or child’s sleeping patterns, feeding regime, their feeds and the maternal diet if appropriate. Our dietitian will assess, diagnose and treat for any allergies or intolerances your baby or child may have which could be causing discomfort and therefore disrupting their sleeping pattern. Our specialist team will also assess their dietary intake, length, height and growth to ensure they have an optimal nutritional status and they are reaching their full growth potential.

What is the treatment of feed related sleeping problems?

The treatment of feed related sleeping problems will depend on the cause. Our specialist feeding team will assess your baby or child and give an individualised treatment plan to reduce the feed related sleeping problems they are experiencing.
